The Anchoress 'Margaret of Thornton'

This is my depiction of a famous anchoress from York in the 1300's, it's inspired by a brilliant essay called ' YORKSHIRE’S SPIRITUAL ATHLETES:HERMITS & OTHER SOLITARIES. by Frank Bottomley. The medieval period is often imagned to be rather brown and grey apart from the odd splash of blood, but this is far from the case, and so i'm really taking that on board at the moment. Imagining a book that is  somewhat psychedelic in colour.

Face projection study

This study was done to experiment with faces, or rather lack of a face, how much can you obliterate and still 'see' the girls face. Framing the face with her hands allowed me to go farther than i had before along this path.The top lip and bottom lip highlighted seem to my judgement to be the key elements here in defining here face.

New Postcard

New postcard! Well pleased with these, the quality is great, massive thanks to Active Colour in Pool Cornwall and John Stanbury for letting me hitch a ride on his litho plate when he had a spare place left up there, during the printing of his beautiful new Advice to Sink in Slowly postcard pack. THis image is also available as an A3 poster through John here for £6.00, which is a steal i reckon.

E.S.Master c1460AD 'Tempation to Despair'

Here's a new drawing from  research i am doing for a book set  in  the 14th century, its  a long way off  from completion or even starting the  actual job. This drawing is from a great book called ' The Early Comic Book' by  David Kunzle, in it he reproduces this  amazing  drawing of a dying man, surrounded by devils. I really liked the way  it was inked up, some cross hatching but not  like you would get in  later engraving or woodcut. And real emotion in  the mans face, so i did a copy to see what  was going on and to  adapt it to my style and i really learnt a lot.
